It is the gateway to Nanjing, the second largest city in East China, the third largest international airport in East China, the main trunk airport in China, the main cargo airport in East China, and the backup airport with Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport and Pudong International Airport, ranking among the 10 million large airports in China.
Nanjing Lukou International Airport was officially opened on 28 February 1995 and opened to traffic on 1 July 1997, the day Hong Kong returned to the motherland. On November 18 of the same year, Nanjing Lukou International Airport was approved by the State Council and opened to foreign nationalities. The airport has a 3,600-metre-long and 60-metre-wide runway and a 3,600-metre-long and 45-metre-wide taxiway, which can meet the full weight take-off and landing of all kinds of transport aircraft in the world; the terminal building has a construction area of 132,000 square metres, the airport cargo warehouse has an area of 6,700 square metres inside and 45,000 square metres outside; the apron area is 457,000 square metres, of which 70,000 square metres is for cargo aircraft. At present, it has opened 85 routes to 48 cities in China and abroad.

Since 2009, Beijing Jing Hangan Airport Engineering Co., Ltd. has undertaken the apron lighting and navigation lighting project for the apron expansion of Nanjing Lukou International Airport, the first tender section of information and weak electricity project for the second phase of the project in 2012, and the flight area navigation lighting project for the second phase of the project in 2013. "In 2017, the intelligent building project of the second phase of the terminal building was awarded the title of "2016-2017 Luban Award of China Construction Project" (national quality project) by China Construction Industry Association.
