Haikou Meilan International Airport, located in Lingshan Town, Meilan District, Haikou City, Hainan Province, was officially opened to traffic on 25 May 1999 and is one of the important domestic trunk airports in China. The architecture and greenery of the airport are not only characterised by a strong tropical landscape, but also cleverly blend with the essence of classical Chinese gardens, making it a pleasant environment.
The airport covers an area of 1,140 hectares and has a 4e class flight area. The runway is 3,600 metres long and 45 metres wide; the parallel taxiway is 3,600 metres long and 23 metres wide, which can meet the requirements of Boeing 747-400 and other large aircraft for full weight take-off and landing.
The second phase of the Meilan Airport expansion project will include a new 4f flight area, a new 3,600m long runway, two parallel taxiways and a liaison road system, a new 296,000m2 t2 terminal, 61 aircraft stands and a gtc integrated traffic hub. The construction target of the project is to meet the annual passenger throughput of 35 million passengers and annual cargo and mail throughput of 400,000 tonnes by 2025. The groundbreaking for the project was held on 18 November 2015 and construction will be completed by the end of 2019.
Since February 2017, Beijing Jing Hang An Airport Engineering Co., Ltd. has undertaken the flight area navigation lighting project (second tender section), taxiway guidance marker renewal and renovation project, taxiway centerline light energy saving and base technology renovation project for the second phase expansion project of Haikou Meilan International Airport, which successfully passed the industry acceptance and was delivered in 2018.
