Juba International Airport in South Sudan, is the only international airport in the world's youngest country and is vital to the landlocked South Sudan. The existing main runway, built in the 1980s, is only capable of handling aircraft with less than 200 seats and at the same time, it lacks navigation aids, making night flights impossible. The airport is also in a state of disrepair due to war and other reasons, which results the runway is rutted and cracked, posing a major safety hazard and urgently it is in need of major expansion.
After the completion of the first phase of the Juba International Airport renovation and expansion project, the runway length has been extended from 2400m to 3100m, the maximum take-off and landing aircraft has been upgraded from Boeing 737 to Boeing 767, and the airport has been upgraded to a 24-hour operation.
Beijing Jing Hang An Airport Engineering Co., Ltd. is responsible for the construction of the airport's visual aid lighting project and air traffic control project, which will last for 18 months from December 2014 to May 2016.
